Metsäliitto Group has started moves to limit production at all of its sawmills.

The company blamed low demand and pricing for its decision to start statutory labour negotiations at all mills, with 380 employees affected.

Possible temporary layoffs are planned and are likely to take the form of extensions to summer holidays and, if necessary, curtailments later this year. The company will take the action over a maximum of 90 days.

“As timber with competitive prices in comparison to market prices is not yet sufficiently available, we must be prepared to adjust our production to lower volumes to improve profitability,” said Ole Salvén, group executive vice-president, Metsäliitto Wood Products Industry.

Metsäliitto has been very active in purchasing logs and says it has achieved a very high share, but the volume of timber trade “has not been sufficient”.
