Authorities in Fiji are turning to timber manhole covers to combat scrap metal thefts, according to a report in the Fiji Times.

The council in Lautoka said it had been forced to use temporary timber covers on manholes after scrap metal thieves stole the original metal ones.

Even replacement metal covers have been stolen, leaving gaping holes which have led to several people being injured.

One group of thieves with about 10 manhole covers was apprehended in the city.

The government has stopped issuing licences to scrap metal dealers in order to control the number operating.
