Covers Timber and Builders Merchants says it is well prepared for snow this winter after making advance preparations to ensure that business is not affected.

“We are trialling a tipper snow bucket at our head office in Chichester so that we can easily remove large amounts of snow from around the main areas to allow our customers to continue trading with us,” said Ben Gale, Covers marketing co-ordinator.

If successful, then more will be purchased for the larger depots within the group.”

Covers has increased its levels of winter grit, both for internal use and to sell on and snow shovels, which are selling at a rapid rate. Sledges are also being stocked.

Keith Fryer, of Clapham-based T Brewer & Co, said the merchant was making sure its sites had adequate salt and shovels and plans to keep the yards in a workable condition. Its Enfield site will be stocking a slightly increased range of winter products for customers.

“We’re not going into winter products too heavily this year because everyone, even Tesco’s are jumping on the bandwagon,” added Jeff Low, of Dundee-based Rembrand Timber. He said he had a feeling it could be a milder winter.
