The UCM Timber plc agency has expanded its product portfolio by buying the trading business of Mercantile International Group plc.

The Macclesfield-based Mercantile agency specializes in Far Eastern garden furniture, doors, conservatory panels and other semi-finished components and products.

UCM bought the company out of receivership for an undisclosed sum, but predicts it will progress under new ownership and restyled as UCM (Specialities) Ltd.

“Mercantile International’s successful trading business was overshadowed in recent years but we are confident in the management team and their long-standing relationships with customers and suppliers,” said UCM Timber plc managing director Mark Plews.

The new business will employ five people in Macclesfield, with Mr Plews becoming chairman, and former Mercantile executive Harry Mitchell as managing director .

As part of the arrangement, UCM has also gained a Singapore subsidiary, now trading as Mercantile International (Pte) Ltd .
