The Tradis closed panel wall and roof system featuring Masonite Beam’s I-beams and Excel’s Warmcel 500 insulation have been selected for the new HQ of the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) on the Isle of Man.

The building, due for completion in early 2010, has been designed to minimise the impact on the environment by maximising the use of natural ventilation and lighting.

Once completed, the roof on the west side of the building will be covered with a sedum blanket which filters out pollutants from the air and absorbs CO2.

The building’s architecture borrows from agricultural barns and will be built using mainly timber and glass to blend into the surrounding landscape. It will incorporate 1,800m² of open plan office accommodation on two floor levels.

Karen Horncastle, of Ashley Pettit Architects, who chose the Tradis system, said: “Research revealed the system could fulfill the sustainability criteria of the project, which was an important part of the client’s brief.”

The architects have been working on the project with Eden Frame, the Cumbria-based sustainable building company.
