The prototype MDF board developed by Michigan State University is made with plastic and manure fibres.
Researchers claim the product is environmentally-friendly and could be employed in a range of uses, including playground equipment and in homes.
Boards are manufactured using fibrous material left after manure has broken down.
The university development team says manure and plastic fibres intertwine during the production process, which, it claims, gives load-bearing and strength advantages.
