Malaysian timber company Hormat Jadi Sdn Bhd has received the Exemplary Reduced Impact Logging (RIL) Certificate from the Sabah Forestry Department (SFD) in recognition of its sustainable logging operations.

SFD director Datuk Sam Mannan is reported as saying that Hormat Jadi was arguably the only company in the world that had produced a significant volume of tropical timber within a relatively short time while maintaining RIL standards and without compromising the quality of work and still maintaining the forest environment.

RIL is the planned and carefully controlled harvest of timber in a way that minimises impacts on forest stands and on soil. Its conditions include defining the minimum length of the cutting cycle; conducting a pre-harvest inventory; limiting the amount of stand basal area that may be removed, and building access roads and cutting vines well in advance.

Between September 2006 and December 2007, Hormat Jadi is reported to have produced 68,000 pieces of tropical logs or 290,000m³ despite tough RIL conditions.
