The Malaysian forestry and timber industries will now be managed by two ministries, following a revamp of the federal cabinet.
The plantation enterprises and commodities ministry will deal with the downstream section of the industry, including sawn logs, veneer and furniture products, while the natural resources and environment ministry will protect and conserve the natural forests and its resources.
But the changes, aimed at bringing a more focused approach to the industries, apply only to peninsular Malaysia and not Sabah and Sarawak, which have their own state forestry acts.
