Fourteen companies worldwide produced in excess of one billion board feet of lumber during 2001, according to the newsletter Wood Markets Monthly.
Weyerhaeuser remains the front-runner with 6.3 billion bd ft in lumber production last year; the figure includes Willamette‘s volumes. In second place is Internationnal Paper with 3.6 billion bd ft while Stora Enso is in third with 2.4 billion bd ft.
In Europe the top 10 sawn timber producers represented 8.25 billion bd ft in sawn wood capacity in 2001.
Stora Enso led the field , followed by Finnforest and UPM-Kymmene with 2.4 billion bd ft and 1.8 billion bd ft respectively.
