B&K Timber Structures (BKTS), the engineered timber division of B&K Steelwork Fabrications Ltd, has supplied 300m³ of curved glulam for a new bus garage in Canning Town, east London.

The company has supplied the glulam for the roof structure, and has also supplied 200 tonnes of tubular structural steelwork for West Ham Bus Garage.

It is set to be Britain’s largest bus garage when completed and will provide London Transport with a new hub to deal with the increased traffic arising from the 2012 Olympic Games.

The contract is worth £1.6m to BKTS, according to operations manager Wayne Yeomans, who added that the company is seeing rising demand for glulam and steel composite structures.

“We’ve built the business to just shy of £5m in the first year, and are aiming for £7-10m this year,” he said. “We’re almost running against the tide.”

BKTS has already undertaken a number of high-profile projects, including an Asda eco-store in Oldham and J Sainsbury plc’s flagship eco-store in Dartmouth.
