The company has reduced its shifts from two to one per day. Earlier cutbacks had seen shifts reduced from three a day.

Border Timbers blamed the shortages on timber plantation fires started by resettled farmers who have moved into forest areas under the government’s land reform programme. It said power cuts had also not helped.

The Paulington factory produces veneer, plywood and blockboard, as well as doors and mouldings, which are sold locally in Zimbabwe and exported to the European and American markets.

Border Timbers International based in Nyakamete produces doors, shelves and other manufactured items for export markets in South Korea and the US.
