FSC is highlighted in newly-published supplementary planning guidance (SPG), intended to help meet radical new objectives in sustainable building design contained in the London Plan Review.

The guidance, which does not set policy but is expected to carry weight in specifying, outlines “essential standards” for material specification, including 50% timber from FSC sources and the balance from a known temperate source.

It also defines the “Mayor’s preferred standards” as 90% structural timber from FSC sources and the balance of timber products from a known temperate source.

“I want all major developments in London to embrace the standards set out in this SPG so that in the future these standards become the norm,” said Mr Livingstone.

The London Plan Review also requires new developments to connect to decentralised local energy supplies, doubling carbon emission reduction targets to 20% through on-site renewable energy generation.
