Organiser Deutsche Messe said more than 40% of the show’s visitors came from abroad, beating the figure from Ligna 2011.

The healthy visitor numbers, on a par with 2011, coupled with good exhibitor feedback "resoundingly reaffirmed" Hannover-based Ligna’s status as the world’s leading trade fair for the forestry and wood industries, said Deutsche Messe.

Weinig AG CEO Wolfgang Pöschl said he was particularly impressed with the calibre of international visitors.

"We experienced a major turnout by professionals from eastern Europe, particularly Russia, and huge attendance from the US and other key export markets," he said.

"We are seeing strong demand for advanced machines with new functions and are pleased to note that a great deal of momentum is coming from the wood construction sector, as a result of its efforts to take sustainability to new heights."
