Liberia’s government has cancelled all forest concessions in the West African country.

President Elen Johnson-Sirleaf’s decision follows the forest concession review committee’s recommendation last year to cancel the concessions.

The government has also created a forestry reform monitoring committee, involving the Forestry Development Authority and Liberia Forest Initiative, to monitor forest management reform. The committee will oversee the development and implementation of future forest concession allocations.

Liberia’s timber industry has previously said that cancellation of forest concessions would “victimise” the country’s timber traders.
