The excellent practical learning initiatives of cabinet maker Benjamin Clayton Ltd of Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire-based Carpentry Management Contracting (CMC) have won the companies regional Edge Employer Awards.

The awards, backed by celebrity chef Jamie Oliver and Simon Woodroffe, the founder of the Yo! Sushi chain of restaurants, aim to recognise the best employers in England offering practical learning opportunities to 14-25 year olds.

The two companies beat hundreds of other contenders to become regional winners and now go forward to the national finals.

CMC managing director Martyn Price said: “CMC has always recognised that continued success is totally dependent on the people we employ. Our successful and locally acclaimed apprenticeship scheme has always been a key part of the company’s strategy to support the development of the workforce and to tackle the issue of skill shortages within the industry.”

Benjamin Clayton chairman Mike Cottman said: “Our business dictates that we produce absolutely the best handcrafted furniture that English cabinet makers can produce.

“As such, all new employees are given extensive hands-on training with Ben Clayton. His is a ‘show and tell’ approach, with employees given every chance to add their own distinctive touches to Ben’s designs. This encourages a sense of ownership and pride in the pieces created.”

The four national winners will be announced on November 1.
