Nearly half of Latvia’s state forests are to undergo Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) management certification assessments.
About 750,000ha in four regions, 48% of the state’s total forestland,
will be assessed as a result of an agreement between the Latvian State Forest (LVM) and the SmartWood programme of the Rainforest Alliance.
“LVM’s decision confirms Latvia’s position as one of the leading countries committing to FSC certification in eastern Europe.” ” |

A similar area was FSC-certified last year by the SGS Qualifor programme. Two SmartWood teams will start assessment on November 4, with the fieldwork taking about two weeks and a certification decision expected by the end of the year.
