A reduction in VOC emissions of more than 90% in three years has won Leaderflush + Shapland Ltd a top environmental award in Devon.

The company has been confirmed as the winner of the Waste Minimisation category of the Devon Environmental Business Initiative competition for 2001. The initiative aims to promote novel solutions to environmental problems.

The environmental project management team at Leaderflush + Shapland was led by engineering manager Glenn Heywood who saw VOC emissions at the company’s Barnstaple factory reduced from 36.5 tonnes in 1998 to 3.4 tonnes in 2001.

Mr Heywood said suppliers and the 200-strong workforce had all helped achieve the waste minimisation improvements. He also made special mention of paints, stains and lacquers manufacturer and supplier Arch Coatings: ‘Without their excellent products and patient, diligent and faultless technical support, we would not have achieved the impressive results.’

Prior to the project Leaderflush + Shapland was using solvent-based finishing materials that put it outside the control parameters of the Environment Protection Agency.
