Rural Kenyan farmers are planting genetically superior eucalyptus trees in a bid to provide their own sources of wood and preserve the country’s forests.

The trees are being distributed by the Kenya Forestry Research Institute as part of a National Agroforestry Research Project.

Fuelwood consumption, especially by farmers, has been outstripping supply in recent years. Eucalyptus trees mature in six years but can be used for firewood and fencing within just two years.
