Kährs claims it is the first company to be able to offer dual-labelled FSC/Fairtrade certified timber.

The hardwood flooring company has become the first company to confirm its commitment to a new timber pilot scheme in Chile, which hopes to restore the fortunes of people living in the poor region of the Curacautin Valley.

The Valley is one of the first regions in Chile to re-establish its native forest.

Sweden-based SSC Forestry Group has backed the creation of a new sawmill there, while the local community has been provided with forest education and local farmers are managing the forest in a sustainable way.

Nearly a thousand people used to work at the valley’s former sawmill, constructed in the early 20th century. But forest mismanagement led to a depletion of timber stocks.

“Our hope is that we can help alleviate poverty and restore biodiversity by offering the first flooring made of FSC/Fairtrade certified wood in the world,” said Per Skårner, Kährs CEO.

Kährs dual-labelled flooring will be available from later this year.
