The Material Lab was set up by tile maker Johnson Tiles as a showcase for sheet materials and surface coatings for the architect and design communities. It features displays of different products, highlighting their applications, and also organises events focused on specific products.

“In its nine-year history, the JOSB Done campaign has done a very effective job in targeting principally the jobbing builder,” said Alastair Kerr, director-general of the Wood Panel Industries Federation, which helps manage the campaign in association with sponsors SmartPly, Norbord and resin manufacturer Huntsman.

“Taking space in the Material Lab will enable us to connect with other audiences, such as designers and the shop fitting industry.” The Material Lab, he added, was well known in the specifier sector.

“It is a relatively small facility, but has a strong reputation in highlighting product innovation and reaching professionals like interior designers,” said Mr Kerr.

“It will give the product very good exposure and enable JOSB Done to highlight its potential.” Other products at the Material Lab range from plastic and vinyl, to leather, ceramic, paper and glass, with supplier manufacturers including Formica Group and Karndean.

It bills itself as a place where “inspiration and creativity go hand in hand”. “We are also a hub for sharing ideas, networking and for visitors and users to meet clients,” it said. Visitors are also invited to take away samples and offered guidance in materials use.
