Age is no barrier at Richard Burbidge Ltd which has won a government-backed award as part of a campaign to combat age prejudice in the workplace.

The company was Shropshire county winner in the nationwide Regional Newspaper Age Diversity Awards. It was nominated by 72-year-old Ted Steward, who joined the company a year ago.

Richard Burbidge’s human resources manager Cynthia Webber, who received the award in London from employment and equal opportunities minister Margaret Hodge, said: ‘Our recruitment policy is based on finding the right person for the job, regardless of their age. Older people are equally capable of being trained as younger employees; the average age of our workforce is touching 40.’
