A London joinery factory set up to provide job opportunities for people with disabilities is celebrating becoming an assessment centre for nationally recognised training qualifications.

Stratford-based Newco Products, which makes kitchen units and joinery products for the construction industry, was congratulated by Newham Council mayor Sir Robin Wales.

Sir Robin, who presented staff with the NVQ Assessment Centre certificate, said: “Newco is a highly skilled manufacturing unit with an enviable reputation for quality and a strong history of supporting disabled people in employment.”

Newco, whose 80 staff include 44 with some disability or learning difficulty, was established in the 1920s to help blind people and has remained the responsibility of the local authority ever since. Its annual turnover now stands at £2.5m.
