Jewson has rejoined the Builders Merchants Federation (BMF) after a three-year absence.

The announcement, made today at the BMF’s Soho Square offices, was described by BMF managing director Chris Pateman as an “important strengthening of The Federation’s ambition to truly represent the entire merchant trade”.

Jewson, which has 532 merchant branches, originally left the BMF due to the federation’s decision to develop closer ties with the DIY retailing industry.

But the company’s managing director Peter Hindle said the federation’s decision recently to close its retail membership category and renew the focus on professional builders merchants had persuaded Jewson to re-join.

“The BMF is unique in being focused entirely upon the merchant industry,” said Mr Hindle. “We have seen that focus grow strongly and sharply in the last few months particularly with the move away from retailer membership; we feel it is more important than ever for Jewson to play an active role in this vital industry forum.”

Mr Hindle said he hoped Jewson’s move would encourage other national merchant groups to re-join the BMF.
