Jewson chief executive Peter Hindle has said 2008 will be a difficult market for builders merchants but good business opportunities remain in the commercial sector, social housing and government infrastructure work.

Speaking in London, Mr Hindle said new housing would be difficult and the repair, maintenance and improvement sector may become more difficult due to the impact of the credit crunch.

“It will be a hard market for sure,” he said. “But there will still be sectors that will be busy.”

He predicted growth to be driven more by price inflation than volume, continuing last year’s trend.
