JELD-WEN is to establish a recycling facility in Lowestoft that will allow it to recycle untreated timber from across the group and produce wood pellets to fuel its heating systems.

According to JELD-WEN, recycling its own timber waste to produce biofuel will help it reduce carbon emissions and make its supply chain more sustainable. General manager Tom Horne added that the decision to build a recycling plant “really does go to show that products manufactured from timber are the truly environmental choice”.

The facility, described as a “complete 360° recycling solution”, is part of a drive by the manufacturer to achieve the ISO 14001 environmental standard.

“Being environmentally responsible is really important for us and this takes our policy of only sourcing timber from well-managed certified forests one step further,” said Mr Horne.

“We see this as a truly sustainable solution to meeting our environmental and waste disposal requirements as well as ongoing energy needs now and in the future, both for us and other businesses.”

JELD-WEN Lowestoft manufactures timber components for the company’s range of windows, doors and stairs, as well as offering products to other businesses within the timber and construction industries.
