JELD-WEN UK Ltd is pressing the government to make fire doors mandatory for bedrooms in all new homes.
The Doncaster-based joinery manufacturer is seeking to influence the revision of building regulation approved document B to include a requirement that fire doors be fitted in bedrooms.
European marketing director Joanne Mitchell said: “With a quarter of all fatalities occurring because people are trapped whilst asleep, the case for fire door installation in bedrooms is incontrovertible.”
Current regulations only require fire and smoke-resistant doors to be fitted in hotel bedrooms and houses with more than two floors.
Ms Mitchell said the current economic climate of high house prices, which is forcing more young and old people into rented accommodation, meant fire door legislation should be firmly on the government’s agenda.
JELD-WEN’s fire doors are checked and tested under the British Woodworking Federation‘s Certifire Fire Door and Doorset scheme.
