JELD-WEN has delivered the first stairs certificated under the British Woodworking Federation’s (BWF) Timber Stair Accreditation and Fire Certification Scheme.

The stairs, made at the company’s Melton Mowbray factory, were marked with a distinctive scheme badge.

The badge, applied in the factory, provides customers with a guarantee that stairs have achieved the BWF certification.

Each stair is then fully traceable through its own serial number on the badge, which identified the level of accreditation or certification and the manufacturer’s contact details. Badge records will be kept for a minimum of 10 years.

JELD-WEN technical director Ian Purkis said building control inspectors who see a badge on a stair will be assured the product has been manufactured and audited under controlled procedures.

“This is a powerful message for the timber stairs sector, too as it provides a valuable point of difference that will help us to promote timber’s use over other materials,” he said.
