The Institute of Wood Science (IWSc) has announced the full programme for its annual conference, including speakers from DEFRA, BRE and TRADA.

The Birmingham conference, themed “Wood Procurement and Performance”, will kick off with DEFRA procurement adviser Bob Andrew and Dr Mike Packer of Timbmet outlining current practice and reviewing proposed legislation in the public procurement of timber.

Private sector procurement will be discussed by Dr Peter Bonfield, managing director of the BRE‘s construction division, who will reveal the latest news on the organisation’s BREEAM eco-standard – a method for reviewing buildings’ environmental performance.

Rupert Oliver of Forest Industries Intelligence will update delegates on certification, while TRADA president Peter Ross will discuss European codes and standards.

Case studies will include the new Cake House in St James’s Park by Gary Clark of Hopkins Architects, while Ben Tuxworth of Forum for the Future will describe a sustainable self-build project in Cheltenham. Director of Hopkins Architects James Greaves will present a case study of award-winning UK buildings.

The conference will be held on September 30 and is aimed at architects, engineers, designers and wood specialists.
