Italian architects gave American red oak flooring the thumbs up at an architectural building show in Bologna.

The American Hardwood Export Council‘s survey (AHEC) at the Saiedue exhibition revealed that 95% of the 48 architects questioned would be prepared to specify an American red oak floor even though only 35% knew which species it was.

Only 33% were aware red oak was widely available and suitable for a wide range of architectural applications. More than 60% preferred the look of hardwood flooring with character.

AHEC, whose stand at Saiedue featured a red oak strip floor, said the findings support its belief that most architects do not use much red oak because of a lack of exposure to it rather than any opposition to its look. The results, which back up the results of a similar survey held at the 100% Detail show in London last year, also highlight the growing trend for character grade flooring.

David Venables, AHEC’s European director, said: “It is important to continue promoting red oak to markets in Europe. We have seen what happens when markets get single species fatigue – the consumer’s interest in wood products wanes.

“Therefore the more species we can offer, the more options there are available to architects and designers.”
