Using the Alpine wall system means the 2,600ft2 house in Kesh, Co Fermanagh, can be highly insulated and the completed building is expected to achieve the Passivhaus/AECB Gold Standard.

"We chose to use SpaceStud because it provides a large void for the cellulose insulation," said Patrick Fallis of Fallis Construction. "It creates a thermally broken timber frame which is a very important aspect when designing and building to the Passivhaus standard."

Fallis manufactured the SpaceStuds on a simply 10-tonne press. Once on site, the system was erected, clad and insulated. The wall construction comprises 12.5mm Fermacell plasterboard, 50mm service void insulated with 50mm Rockwood Flexi, 15mm OSB for racking restraint and airtightness, 258mm SpaceStud with Warmcell500 cellulose insulation, and 80mm Gutex ThermowWall board. The exterior is finished with silicone render.

Alpine’s open-web SpaceJoists are used in the floor to accommodate ducting for the mechanical ventilation and heat recovery system.

The house is expected to have a U-value of 0.11 and 0.6 air changes per hour.
