Ireland has revised its roadside fencing standards for timber treated with preservatives other than CCA and creosote.

John Browne, the government’s junior minister for forestry, launched the revised standard for roadside, farm and stud fencing.

The standards were updated to take into account recent changes in the field of timber preservatives and the emergence of new treatments such as Osmose‘s Naturewood and Arch Timber Protection’s Tanalith E.

A task group from the timber standards consultative committee of the National Standards Authority of Ireland updated the standards.

Chaired by Joe O’Carroll of Coford, the group comprised sawmillers, timber growers, fencing contractors, chemical companies, timber treaters and others.

The standards are based on performance requirements rather than treatment schedules for each preservative. All fencing components must meet the performance criteria, based on desired service life.
