BM TRADA has strengthened its Q-Mark fire door certification by launching a registration scheme for installers. The organisation is now looking at a certification programme for fire-resistant glazed screens too.

Strong interest is already being reported for the installation scheme, with 15 installers on the way to full registration.

Managing director of BM TRADA Hugh Taylor said: ‘We have been very conscious that the good work of our manufacturer members could be undermined by shoddy installation – it is quite easy for even the best-intentioned site operative to get it wrong.’

The scheme is aimed at foremen and project managers who oversee joiners. Applicants must undertake practical training, sit an exam and undergo twice-yearly site audits.

A new gold coloured tree symbol on a plastic plug inserted into the doorset will denote that it has been installed to the BM TRADA standard.

BM TRADA will outline its proposals for the glazed screen certification scheme at consultation days in High Wycombe on July 9, Rotherham on July 16 and Stirling on July 17.

‘We anticipate that the timber screen scheme will follow a similar format to that for fire doors,’ said a BM TRADA spokesperson.
