Representatives from across the forestry sector are working together to establish a new collaborative approach in producing the 2010 Forecast of Softwood Availability for the UK.

The collaboration reflects the growing importance of the private growing sector’s contribution to total volume production.

There is also a desire within the processing sector to increase confidence in the forecast outputs and it was felt this would be best achieved through a shared responsibility across the forestry sector.

Officials from the Forestry Commission, Nothern Ireland Forest Service, Confederation of Forest Industries, Forest Research and the e-Business Forum are working on the project.

As well as ensuring a fit-for-purpose forecast in 2010, the partners are laying foundations for future reporting and forecasting on carbon sequestration, wood fuel, biomass and a broadleaf availability forecast for 2015 and beyond.
