Indonesia is teaming up with China in the growing campaign to stamp out illegal logging.
The country’s governments will sign a memorandum of understanding this month – similar to those Indonesia has already signed with Malaysia, the UK and the European Union.
The pact with China – a leading exporter of logs and other wood based products – follows claims that China was importing cheap illegal logs from Indonesia.
Indonesian minister of forestry M Prakosa says the agreement is expected to help curb the smuggling.
He praised Malaysia which banned the import of logs from Indonesia on June 25, and said: “The result of the ban is such that if there are Indonesian logs entering the country, it means that the logs are easily certified as illegal.”
