Teak plantations covering 4,500ha will be grown in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh in the next decade to meet demand created by a construction industry boom.

The Andhra Pradesh Forest Development Corporation is investing £3.5m planting genetically superior teak. It aims to grow 500ha of plantations annually in the next four years and 1,000ha in the years thereafter.

Natural teak forests have disappeared in recent years, forcing the state to import from neighbouring regions.
