Indian timber importers want customs duties on imported logs withdrawn.

They argue that other countries which do not allow deforestation, including Japan, Korea and China, are not imposing duties on imported timber.

Duties of 5% were introduced in 1999-2000, with an additional 4.2% levied in the last budget.

India imports more than 3 million tonnes of logs every year, principally from other Asian countries such as Malaysia and Myanmar.
