Timber importers in India are demanding a cut in forest charges on imported logs from south-east Asia saying they are affecting their business.

There is huge variation in the amounts different states charge for the transit passes, with some asking for nothing while others charge more than Rs95 per tonne.

The discrepanices, say importers, are causing confusion and disadvantaging some businesses.

The Bengal Timber Importers Association said the timber industry in eastern India was suffering the most as it is being forced to look at ports outside West Bengal for imported logs.

Port officials say charges could be lowered if volumes rise.
