Organisers of IMHX 2010 have announced plans to make the show carbon neutral by offering a service to offset the carbon footprint of staging the event.

Visitors and exhibitors to the international materials handling exhibition will be able to calculate their carbon footprint of attending the show in the show’s Environment Zone, with Quartz Publishing and Exhibitions Ltd then planting enough trees in the UK to mitigate the impact.

This will cover the heat, power and lighting used in staging the show and accommodation of guests, as well as transportation to, from and around the NEC in Birmingham. Event director Rob Fisher added that Quartz would be looking to promote carbon sensitive initiatives ahead of IMHX 2010, with car-pooling, the use of public transport and use of recyclable materials throughout the show top of the agenda.

“By assessing and offsetting the carbon the carbon emissions produced by the event, we’re setting a benchmark for exhibitions in the logistics sector and leading the handling industry into environmentally friendly thinking,” said Paul Michael, Quartz managing director.

TTJ’s handling and storage special feature will appear in the May 24/31 issue.
