International Decoratives Surfaces (IDS) and Robbins Timber have both secured Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and Pan European Forest Certification (PEFC) chain of custody certification to meet increasing demand for certified wood products.

IDS, based in Newcastle-under-Lyme, claims to be one of the first national firms in the surface materials sector to gain the certification, which covers all nine distribution branches plus the newly-acquired Boards Leeds operation.

The company’s managing director John Bagshaw said IDS’s customer base, which includes manufacturers, shopfitters, specifiers and builders, were increasingly demanding FSC-certified material.

Certified products include melamine-faced chipboard, melamine-faced MDF, high-density fibreboard and certain species of solid timber worktops.

Britsol-based merchant and marine supplier Robbins Timber achieved FSC and PEFC certification for structural and joinery softwood. It says sales of FSC-certified tatajuba into the marine market is generating a “great deal of interest”.

Managing director Richard Bagnall said: “Many local authority departments and the contractors who work for them are demanding chain of custody certification and we can now target that business.”

Both companies underwent assessment by BM TRADA Certification Ltd.
