Howie Forest Products is in discussions with employees about a further 15 redundancies at its Kenmuir Sawmills.

The Dalbeattie-based sawmiller has already made 12 employees redundant in recent weeks, but said a further downturn had necessitated the need for more job losses.

“The market has got worse in the last three to four weeks,” said joint managing director Hamish Macleod.

“We’re preserving the highly skilled operators to enable us to bounce back when the market returns.”

Howie sales director Keith Ainslie predicted the market is likely to remain suppressed for the next 12-18 months.

“I can’t see anything on the horizon that’s going to change that,” he said.
