Refurbishment work at an old Wesleyan chapel which houses Howarth Timber subsidiary Howarth Thorne has unearthed secrets about the building’s history.

A newspaper dated 1856 found under floorboards during the £50,000 work sparked assistant manager John Brandon into writing to the local newspaper asking for more information about the chapel. Responses informed him it was built in 1807 – 50 years earlier than he had thought.

Mr Brandon is now compiling a photographic record of the chapel dating back to the 19th century.
