American hardwoods company Horizon Wood Products Inc is to target wood products companies in the UK and the Continent with its environmental initiative, EverGreen.

Company spokesperson Bea Terbovich said Horizon developed its EverGreen pledge and logo in 2000 after taking a “serious look” at the state of the wood products industry.

It recognised the importance of accepting environmental harvesting guidelines promoted by groups such as the Sustainable Forestry Initiative and the Forest Stewardship Council, and realised that the future success of the industry depended on it broadening its sights.

Many of Horizon’s customers have since signed up to the scheme and Ms Terbovich said word is spreading about the efforts being made to make the entire industry more accountable and efficient.

Horizon recently refined its EverGreen pledge to develop a seven point EverGreen Initiative which includes promoting vigilance over the use of raw materials and “smart” production practices.

The company has invested a significant amount of money in logo display plaques and explanatory booklets and it now plans to roll its message out with a mail shot to select companies in the UK, Italy, Germany and Spain. It will also target more North American companies.

Ms Terbovich said: “Our mailing list is far from complete.
