Modern uPVC replacement windows in a period house can knock up to £10,000 off its value, according to research undertaken for the BBC programme The Million Pound Property Experiment.

The findings, based on a survey of nearly 8,000 homeowners, suggest that home sellers with plastic windows could be losing about £3bn every year.

Richard Lambert, director of the British Woodworking Federation (BWF), said the research confirmed the findings of the BWF’s opinion trend monitor. He said many householders saw timber windows as something to aspire to, rather than replace.
