An eastern Siberian republic has signed a timber supply agreement with the DIY company The Home Depot.

George Rotsheck of the American company and deputy prime minister of Sakha Republic (Yakutia) Vasily Grabtsevich represented the two parties at the signing ceremony in Yakutsk.

Mr Rotsheck, who said Yakutian timber was high quality and low priced, said the agreement was a long-term venture.

A Yakutian government spokesperson said America’s growing interest in Yakutia was due to the republic’s expanding railroad network, which reduced transport costs.
