Home Depot saw its US sales rise by 17% in 2001 to US$53.53bn, putting the company far ahead of its competitors.
Growth was mainly due to 208 store openings during the year, giving the company a total of 1,342 units.
Nine home centre/lumberyard retailers managed to exceed US$1bn in sales in 2001, averaging 13.2% annual growth and accounting for almost 70% of the top 500 retailers’ sales.
Total US home improvement retail sales last year was US$343bn, a 6% increase on 2000 despite the economy being in recession for much of the period.
