Heywood Rooftruss Company plans to double its workforce over the next 18 months after a four-fold rise in sales in the past year.

The trussed rafter, timber frame and I-joist supplier, which also moves to new premises in Halifax in March, saw turnover fall to £250,000 in the year to last February as a result of the housing slump. Since then it has jumped back to £1m, with profits rising to £100,000.

Managing director Jonathan Mayo put the recovery down to competive pricing and service. And this year, with the construction market recovering, he forecasts a further doubling of turnover.

“People are starting to build this year more aggressively than last year,” he said. “We expect this pace to increase and, while it will be another difficult year, it will be nowhere near as bad as last year.”

Within five years, he added, the plan is to hit turnover of £5m.
