In the aftermath of the recent floods, the Healthy Flooring Network (HFN) is calling on the government to make funds available for smooth flooring.

The HFN is a lobby group campaigning to reduce the UK’s high incidence of allergy illnesses. Its prime objective is to persuade consumers to move away from carpet, which it maintains harbours allergy-triggering dust, mites, pet allergens and ‘toxic pollutants’, and put in flooring which is easier to maintain.

It suggests the government and householders should regard the recent floods as an opportunity to improve the ‘indoor environment’.

‘The flooding has been a disaster, but out of the misery can at least come something positive,’ said HFN spokesperson Helen Lynn. ‘Thousands will now be thinking about re-flooring their homes and can choose to go for healthier options than carpet or PVC.’
