Shop and office fitter Havelock Europa is to close its Nottingham plant with 200 redundancies.

Production of all timber and metal componentry for the retail, banking and educational furniture sectors will instead take place at the group’s Scottish premises in Dalgety Bay and Kirkcaldy.

The changes should take place in early 2002 and the Nottingham site will be put up for sale. A proportion of the timber processing machinery will be transferred to Dalgety Bay, creating up to 90 jobs.

Havelock said the move will result in the planned creation of centres of excellence for its retail interiors and educational furniture businesses totalling more than 400,000ft2.

The company warned of asset rationalisation when it recently took over educational furniture business McIntosh, which also has premises in Scotland. The cost of restructuring is expected to be £3.75m but with resulting annual savings of about £2m.
