Hardwood windows bucked a declining trend in the UK windows market during 2004, market research has revealed.

Surbiton-based Palmer Market Research‘s report on the windows, doors and conservatories market shows hardwood windows held their volume share and grew by 7% in terms of installed value.

Plastic units recorded their first decrease in market share, which Palmer believes “may be seen as significant”. The decline in softwood frames slowed, while aluminium units fell by 16% after three years of increases.

The overall windows market fell by 0.6%, which Palmer attributes to the continuing switch from detached houses to flats.

PVCu entrance doors saw a 29% reverse in their market share. Hardwood units grew by a corresponding amount, mainly due to their popularity as front entrance doors.
