A company which specialises in the supply of native and exotic timbers has been launched in the north-east.

Newcastle Hardwood Ltd and associate company Brown Paper Studios – which designs and manufactures furniture and accessories – have opened their doors on Newcastle’s Quayside.

Marketing director Daniel Rose said: “As timber consumers, we understand all the regular problems associated with buying wood.

“The most common complaints in our experience are the lack of attention to non tradespeople with small requests, the inability to guarantee close tolerances and the supply of timber that is not dried to fit its purpose.”

Mr Rose said Newcastle Hardwood was the brainchild of directors Mark Sumner and Nicola Rose who had both worked for a similar company in the north-east. “That company was supplying people from as far afield as Croydon in the south-east,” he said.

Newcastle Hardwood will stock more than 60 different species from around the world and offers an on-line purchasing facility linked to its website at www.newcastlehardwood.com.

Mr Rose said: “Initially we will source from timber importers, but when we have a bit more buying power we will be looking at importing some ourselves.”

Newcastle Hardwood’s modern workshop is set up to cope with large orders right down to smaller, more intricate requests.

Mr Rose said: “Having installed the very latest machinery, we can guarantee boards cut to tolerances of +/-0.5mm and we have conditioning units where we can control the moisture content and drying time of our timber. This allows us to produce ‘ready to work’ boards and blanks, without checking or warping, when matching a piece’s environment is critical.”
